This section connects portions of the previously captured in the West Wolf Creek Rd to Georgia Highway 60 file. It adds portions of road to the Coopers Creek WMA, as well as a remote section of dirt and gravel trail (FS 640 and Old Dial Rd) that runs nearly unbroken from Skeenah Gap Rd in the east, crosses Georgia Highway 60 / Morganton Highway, and continues to the Shallowford Bridge in the west. Also found in this section is the Toccoa River Canoe Launch at Sandy Bottom, a variety of hiking trails, and a waypoint to a really interesting 'Swinging Bridge' found along the Benton MacKaye Trail.

Isn't FS 35 partially blocked by 1/2 mile of private property? It was when I last attempted to drive through.
ReplyDeleteYou raise a good question. It was not 'blocked' when I visited. There was neither a gate nor a closure. However, there was signage that stated the road continued on through private property but I thought the signage was a bit unclear. The Forest Service lists the road as FS 35, but Google Maps shows this same section as FS 95. The actual sign on the road is FS 35. In either case, if you review the official Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Map for 2011, it lists both FS 35 and FS 95 as "Roads open to highway legal vehicles only, with Seasonal Designation". The link to the Blue Ridge District MVUM is:

Thanks for the question,
David
FS 35 and 640 gates were locked on Saturday. FS 35 from both the Dial area and the Hwy 60 end and 640/644 from the Hwy 60 side also. Can't speak of this latter FS road from the Skeenah Gap side. Appears as if they're logging the area.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. Thanks for the heads-up! I do recall seeing logging activity along FS 35. Also, many FS roads are closed in the Winter for roadbed protection and recovery purposes. Good information, thanks again.
